Forward

Mike and Mykal are a father & son duo that started a production company about two years ago. They are working on the next phase of their production company and look forward to being involved in feature film making. They rolled out a podcast and newsletter to give their audience a means to hear where they are headed and what they are experiencing. The newsletter (The Sprinkler) is fun, informative and value add!  They remind their audience that they leave politics at the door. They want their energy to be positive and wellness based. Share gratitude and be cool to one another!

We bring old school and contemporary ideas to the table.

Mykal & I operate with the credo; be cool to one another. We want to connect with people, and be present while we enjoy this journey.  We have embarked on something that is moving in a direction that affords us to display our creativity and love for film & music in our Psycho Studio’s Podcast on YouTube – now with video!

Come with us as we explore ways to live in the moment and appreciate all we have, rather than what we have not.

Film – Music - Some Wellness – Commentary – Some Sports and Random Headlines

Let’s start with a film quote we love:

Well, anytime I make a movie, I like to load it up with more things than you could ever catch on the first viewing.
Eli Roth

The Psycho Scale:

We use our Psycho Scale for film and TV series rating scores. Our Psycho Scale is 1-Psycho, with Psycho being the highest; 10. Mykal and I watch all scored films and TV series; drawing from decades of real viewing experience.

Film

Let’s talk musical scores for a feature film.

My top five musical scores are listed below and in no particular order. I had about 15 more to share, but narrowed to these five:

Top 5 musical scores - soundtracks:

The Social Network

John Carpenter’s The Thing

Psycho (1960)

The Godfather

Star Wars

Honorable mention – John Carpenter’s Halloween

and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Blurbs Top 5

1) The Social Network’s soundtrack (Trent Reznor) is a character unto itself. That is what defines a great soundtrack –musical score to me, it doesn’t just fill the silence in a film, it is a character that has depth and personality. The Social Network is driven by an amazingly moving score!

2) J Carpenter’s The Thing is one of those rare horror – sci-fi films that transcends time. The music that Carpenter and others composed for this cinematic tour de force is remarkable! The music sets the tone, pace and mood!

3) Bernard Hermann’s score for Psycho is legendary. How many horror or suspense movies have borrowed from his brilliant score? 100? His music was beyond a character as it also defined the action taking place within the dark and horrific script!

4) Larger than life like the title character Nino Rota’s score for The Godfather transcended the masterpiece. The music became synonymous with gangster style movies and it’s sweeping highs and lows moved the audience through the highs and lows of the Corleone family!

5) Star Wars (Could say JAWS as well) score and overall music was the mastermind of John Williams. I recall listening to the record (vinyl) as a young boy. The music in Star Wars sparked generations of duplications as well as the signature sound immediately identifying with the music being from Star Wars!

Added -  Carpenter’s Halloween did what Psycho’s musical score did for the 1960s for the 1980s and beyond! When we hear the first few notes from that haunting score we know immediately to look out for Michael!

Trent Reznor collaborates with David Finch again post The Social Network, and the score for the Girl with Dragon Tattoo was brilliant! The music moves the film at a rapid and thought-provoking pace!

Mykal’s Top 5 Musical Scores:

(In no particular order)

Psycho 1960

The Thing 1982

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2011

Interstellar 2014

Spider-Man 2002

April continued the fucking crazy month theme! We didn’t get to the theatre much as Mykal took a trip to my home state of Wisconsin!

Here is the list of films I watched for the month of April. April films bring May flowers?

Films

Rope 1948 - 8 Incredible Hitchcock – this so-called one shot 40s classic is simply amazing!

High Noon 1952 6 No rifle at the end? Poor music and off timing in the end - shot in real time, considered a classic

Robocop 1987 - 7 One of our favorite sci-fi films!

Spider-Man trilogy 2002 - 2004 - 8-8-6 Raimi rocks!  Our favorite Spiderman film and trilogy!

ATM 2012 – 5 Interesting take and a good watch, many holes to get past

Theater of Blood 1973 – 2 Vincent Price stars in this bad comedy – horror film

A Working Man 2025 – 2 Terrible, more details below

April Fool’s Day 1986 - 6.5 Classic 80s horror flick with a really cool twist!

A Man in a White Van 2024 – 6 Oddly paced retro slasher film worth a watch

Shaun of the Dead 2004 – 6 UK classic zombie film

Rear Window 1954 – 6 A slow burn and Hitchcock classic!

To Catch a Thief 1955 – 7 Different kind of Hitchcock. Cary Grant is amazing!

Doom 2005 – 5 Great music and score, Karl Urban and Rosamund Pike rock!

Dial M for Murder 1954 – 8 One of my favorite Hitchcock films, dark and smart!

The Alto Knights 2025 – 2 Horrible, and unwatchable.

The Crush 1993 – 6 Classic 90s romp, nice twists with a good cast!

Frankenstein 1931 – 8 THE Universal Monster Classic! It’s alive!

Flesh for Frankenstein 1974 – 4 Andy Warhol’s X-rated Frankenstein with Udo Kier

Blood for Dracula 1974 – 4 Andy Warhol’s X-rated Dracula with Udo Kier

House of Frankenstein 1944 – 2 Terrible film trying to bring all the monsters together, gross in the wrong way!

Scream 3 2000 – 6.5 great pace and opening scene! The movie within the movie piece kills!

Novocaine 2025 – 5 Entertaining but falls flat when action and violence ensue. Jack Quaid is good in everything he is in.

More Film:

A Working Man. On a $40 million budget, it has just about broke even in a week.

This is a feature from MGM/Amazon. Statham seems disinterested in this film. Co-written by director David Ayers & Sylvester Stallone; the dialogue is stoopid. The story seems to go nowhere for almost two hours. Borderline unwatchable. Psycho Scale - 1.5

Minecraft the Movie (From Mykal)

Minecraft the Movie is a bizarre $150M fever dream. Decent CGI, off-the-rails story, and Jack Black just yelling item names. Felt like one long skit. Awkward Psycho Scale - 1

And in TV

Severance Season Two ended with a roar, with one of the more memorable endings to a TV series season! The show is a must watch for anyone that digs sci-fi drama and outstanding cast and smart dialogue and story.  All episodes in Season 2 came in with a Psycho rating of 9 with the last episode of Season 2 being a 10!

Daredevil Born Again, four episodes in we are done with this show. We really enjoyed the original series and line up. This recent iteration is abyssal. All four episodes came in at a 1 on our Psycho Scale! No more for this show, shutting it down on this end.

The Righteous Gemstones final season is gross, boring and fun. Hard to combine all those elements into one outrageous show. Danny McBride’s take on the religious crazies out there making money hand over fist from desperate followers!  Psycho Scale – 5

Friends and Neighbors with Jon Hamm is entertaining. Hamm’s main character seems to borrow from Don Draper and his feature film portrayal of Fletch. The show has a stellar cast, smart and biting writing and an interesting Breaking Bad like element. Through five episodes the Psycho Scale comes in at an 8.

The Shrink Next Door. Mykal suggested this twisted comedy which is more of a drama. Stars Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd. It is sad and awkward but also entertaining. Based on true events surrounding a sick and twisted shrink! Mykal’s Psycho Score is an 8 and I come in at a 6. Worth a watch.

The Patient with Steve Carrell is unique in its limited one season run as well as seeing Steve display his dramatic acting chops. This is totally worth a watch, it is dark and depressing but well written with a great cast and depth. My Psycho Score is 7.

Better Call Saul – We are two episodes away from finishing one of our favorite TV series of all time! We are giving this season an 8 plus! We wanted to watch it together and it took many unfortunate events for us to find the time and space. The show is beyond smart, amazing cast top to bottom, beautiful cinematography and sensical dialogue.

Music

In the rock and roll universe there was some interesting new releases in April. Let’s see what we heard:

Rise Against two new singles:

Prizefighter

Nod

Total runtime 6 minutes. Rise Against is one of our favorite alternative rock groups and these two singles do not disappoint. Looking forward to the new album! Both tracks get an 8

LA Guns. Released their full album, Leopard Skin. 2025. 10 tracks. 39 minutes. Old School 80’s metal group that was a notch below the big guns of the 80’s landscape. This album is ok, lacks the punch and original feel and sound of their earlier stuff. The album gets a 5.

Green Day’s new single Smash it Like Belushi is a very short song. Good tune coming in under 3 minutes, interested in hearing the whole album. Give the track a 7.

Bush’s new single; 60 ways to Forget People. This one is not for me. From the album I Beat Loneliness. I love old Bush; this whiny and tired new song gets a 2.

Puddle of Mudd’s new single; Beautimous is from the upcoming album The Machine. We have always really liked Puddle of Mudd and their post grunge rock sound of the late 90s and into the 2000s. The single has a nice edge to it and I give it a solid 8! Can’t wait for the album!

Retro Talk:

The Doors, one of our favorite classic rock groups. It’s more about Jim Morrison and his vocal style and poetic song writing. Love their music, from every album and period. RIP Jim, gone way to early. It is so very cool Mykal, at his young age digs The Doors too!

I have been feeling a love and hate relationship with the classic group Led Zeppelin. Turns out Mykal dislikes the mighty Led Zeppelin altogether. I did not know that in the immortal words of the late great Johnny Carson! I grew up hearing just a few of Zepp’s songs as that is all they played on the local radio stations. I grew into a rebellious teen and bought the Led albums I could. I wore those album outs and grew to love the band. I never liked the over bloated Stairway to Heaven. My friends and I were heading to Chicago back in the day to procure tickets to see the mighty Led Zep in Chicago. Tragically, news broke before we left that iconic John Bonham had died.  The group was such a tight knit family they simply could not continue when one of their own was no longer on this planet.

Through the years it is on and off again for me, and I am feeling this Spring into Summer will be a return to the blasting vocals from Robert Plant, the amazing guitar playing of Jimmy Page, the keep it all together bass playing from John Paul Jones and the thunderous drumming of John Bonham. Over the Hills and Far Away we go!

Long live rock and roll!  Mykal and I are looking forward to the Nine Inch Nail’s concert later this year! Broken record time!

Sharing three really great rock and roll playlists from our Spotify premium account:

And let’s revisit one of Mykal’s and my favorite alternative rock groups – Royal Blood!

Some Wellness

This article brought to us by Guardian.

When it comes to overall well-being, physical and mental health go hand in hand. Poor mental health can lead to physical health problems, and healthy living habits can help lower the risk of mental illnesses, like depression and anxiety. That's why overall health means caring for your body and your mind. This article will tell you about the importance of nurturing better mental health and how it can positively impact your overall well-being.

How are mental health, mental wellness, and mental wellbeing different?

While these three terms are often used interchangeably, there are important differences in what they mean.

Mental Health affects everyone — from childhood through adulthood — and impacts a person's psychological, emotional, and social well-being. Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being, which can affect how we think, feel, and act. When mental health suffers, it may result in mental illness — diagnosable conditions that negatively affect how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. While the definition of what is and isn't an official mental illness can sometimes be controversial, most mental illnesses are found in people across the globe. This indicates that mental illness is an actual biological condition instead of behavior that goes against societal expectations and cultural norms.4

Not everyone struggles with mental illness, but we all have mental ups and downs. Unlike mental health, mental wellness refers to how well we can respond to positive and negative emotions and handle the stress that occurs in our daily lives. People with mental illness can often achieve better mental wellness, for example, by learning new skills from talk therapy or by responding well to medication. And while stressors and problems may affect a person's mood, it doesn't necessarily impair mental wellness, which has to do with how a person deals with their emotions, thoughts, and actions over the long term, through good times and bad.5

Mental wellbeing refers to general feelings and attitudes that you feel about yourself and your life. A person with good mental well-being has a satisfying life, a strong sense of purpose, and displays generally positive emotions — despite the inevitable challenges of life.

What factors impact mental wellness?

When it comes to their own thoughts and emotions, people often casually use (and misuse) mental health terms. For example, someone might say they were depressed when they were having a bad day, or their ADD kicked in when they got bored in class. However, there's a difference between feeling depressed and having depression or feeling anxious versus having a generalized anxiety or panic disorder.

Similarly, not everyone who is distracted suffers from attention deficit disorder, or ADD. Depressed mood, anxiety, and ADD are clinical mental health disorders that must be diagnosed by a doctor. But even though you don't have a clinical condition, you may still have problems coping due to issues that impact your life situation, body, and mental outlook. In the following sections, we will provide mental health tips to help you manage these factors effectively.

Mental wellness is a complex issue that is impacted by many factors. Some of these include:

·       Biological: Several biological factors impact mental wellness, including chemical imbalances, genetics, poor nutrition, inflammation, brain injuries, congenital disabilities, substance abuse, and others. Having a physical illness also impacts mental wellness.

·       Environmental: Stress from the outside world can — and does — impair mental wellness. Factors like your living environment, employment, finances, safety, and other issues (such as the disruptions of the Covid-19 pandemic can cause all mental distress.

·       Social: Having good relationships with family, friends, and colleagues, making meaningful contributions to — and being part of — a support system, and feeling a sense of belonging all play an important role in mental and emotional wellness.

·       Individual: A personal sense of purpose, strong communication skills, and the ability to deal with outside stressors may positively impact a person's mental state.

10 things you can do to help promote positive mental wellness

Some mental health issues require the use of prescribed medications, typically in combination with psychotherapy from a licensed expert. However, there are also steps that any person can take to help improve their own mental and physical wellness.

1.     Eat a healthy, balanced diet: Multiple studies have found that eating too much refined sugar or processed food impacts brain functioning and stresses organs like the pancreas. These create negative insulin responses that cause surges in stressor hormones, like cortisol, and increase inflammation. These biological responses can exacerbate anxiety, along with depressed and negative moods. However, good nutrition and only eating when you're hungry can help regulate blood sugar and energy levels, leading to better moods and focus.

2.     Get enough quality sleep: People struggling with poor mental well-being often battle with sleep, suffering more from insomnia and sleep apnea than those with higher mental wellness. Researchers have found that a good night's sleep — especially deep, REM sleep — is critical for the brain to process emotional information. Not getting enough sleep hinders the brain's ability to merge positive emotional data, which in turn can lead to more negative thinking and behaviors.

3.     Exercise regularly: Exercise is a natural stress reliever. When you are physically active, it changes the body's chemistry in a positive way, boosting dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels, which can help improve mood and concentration. Exercise also removes tension from the body and helps relax muscles, which can help lead to good sleep.

4.     Stop smoking: People who have poor mental well-being tend to smoke more than those with higher mental well-being. The reason is often physical. People struggling with mental health conditions like depression and anxiety may produce lower dopamine levels, which influence positive feelings in the brain. Nicotine triggers dopamine production, so cigarettes can help provide temporary relief. However, smoking is not only bad for physical health; researchers are finding it can also worsen depression and anxiety.

5.     Avoid alcohol: Many people turn to alcohol to cope with stress, anxiety, and depressed feelings. However, alcohol is a depressant, disrupting the neurotransmitters that impact your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. While a drink may temporarily help a person feel relaxed or less anxious, the effect wears off quickly and can lead to increased negative feelings. Research indicates that people who drink a lot are at risk of having more symptoms of depression, anxiety, and psychosis.

6.     Stay connected: There's nothing like having a friend. Strong relationships and positive social connections can help improve both physical and mental health. Feeling connected to others has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression, strengthen the immune system, and reduce inflammation. If you are not in a place where you can build face-to-face relationships, technology can help. Studies have found that online friendships can provide many of the same health benefits as in-person relationships. Another good way to connect is to look for an online community of people who share your unique interests.

7.     Get a pet: Studies show that animals — particularly dogs and cats — can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depressed moods. Even watching a fish tank has been shown to lower blood pressure and improve mental wellness. Pets also provide a sense of purpose and connection which is important for staying positive and can often help individuals get more exercise. Playing with a pet also can raise the brain's feel-good chemicals – like dopamine and oxytocin. But, of course, a pet is a long-term commitment, and you should not get a pet unless you are willing and able to care for the animal properly.

8.     Practice stress relievers: Yoga, journaling, meditation, breathing exercises, etc., are all proven methods for reducing stress, which can help improve your mental state.

9.     Balance work and life: While working long hours is often encouraged by our culture, it is not healthy — physically or mentally. It's important to set boundaries — like not working past a specific time at night or making sure you take a lunch break — to help avoid burnout. Finding and partaking in hobbies you enjoy and are excited about can make it easier to separate yourself from work. Hobbies can also help you build and maintain connections.

10.  Seek professional help if needed: While the practices listed in this article can help improve mental wellbeing, sometimes they simply aren't enough, or you may need more immediate help. When other methods don't help, consider reaching out to a professional.

While it may be tempting to avoid unpleasant emotions, doing so ultimately undermines our mental health and overall well-being. By embracing our emotions with courage and compassion, we empower ourselves to cultivate greater emotional resilience and lead more fulfilling lives. Acknowledging our emotions is not a sign of weakness but rather a testament to our strength and capacity for growth.

Commentary

We decided to maintain our newsletter for a while longer before we transition it to A Psycho’s Blog. Life comes at you fast, and sometimes its valuable to step back, take a deep breath and pump the goddamn brakes!

My share this month is service in this county. Whether it be customer service at a local restaurant, at the bank, grocery store or customer service over the phone. Mykal predicted this years ago, just prior to the pandemic he stated that things would get worse as we discussed service levels for a myriad of businesses. It stinks on ice that he was correct!

For every good to very good service interaction I experience nine that are terrible. It’s inconsistent as well, I can’t say In N Out always has great service, or American Express is always spot on. The interactions go from the ridiculous to the sublime! Mykal and I pride ourselves on do unto others as well as be cool to each other. This doesn’t seem to matter in many situations. I have experienced such inconsistencies with service and support over the last six months I could scream, alright one moment. Alright, I had to get up and go outside and SCREAM! I always maintain my professionalism and courtesy is extended to all I deal with. I have recently dealt with the Arizona Department of Transportation; the Milwaukee County and Madison County state records and it has been a sea of inconsistency and a sprinkling of positivity. I’m working on getting my travel ID and there have been some speed bumps. After over a dozen phone calls to various departments within both states I was fortunate to be connected with two individuals. The gentleman from Arizona was friendly and helpful and the woman from Wisconsin was beyond understanding and assistance driven. The point here is we are all living our stories. There is no reason for any of us to not be respectful to one another. If our job is service, serve the best to your ability, be kind and friendly. The same adheres to the customers as well. We never know what someone is going through, a kind word or smile or compliment can go a long way to connect with each other.

Technology is such a bittersweet beast! Let’s be mindful of how we communicate with one another! Let’s be cool to one another, always!

Some Sports

Green Bay Packers – The 2025 NFL Draft was held in Green Bay and this was the first time the draft ever took place in the tiny 100K population burg. Over 600K attended. It was a rousing success! The Packers made eight picks and on paper I would give them an A grade! Carry the G!

The Green Bay Packers 2025 Draft Class:

Matthew Golden WR

Anthony Belton OL

Savion Williams WR

Barryn Sorrell Edge Rusher

Collin Oliver Edge Rusher

Warren Brinson DT

Micah Robinson CB

John Williams OL

Milwaukee Bucks – The Bucks ended the regular season strong with an eight-game win streak. They are battling the Indiana Pacers, who have homecourt advantage in round one of the playoffs. The series should have been tied two games each, but alas the Bucks lost game 4 at home! This one looked like it was going to seven games. Damien Lillard returned in game 2 after being out almost a month with a serious blood clot issue, incredible! However, Lillard suffered a non-contact achilles tear at the beginning of game 4.  Fear the Deer, sadly this is once again like fearing Bambi. Giannis should have taken this team past these pesky Pacers into the second round of the playoffs. The future for the Bucks is extremely uncertain. We can hang our hat as Bucks fans on the NBA Championship in 2021.

Milwaukee Brewers – After a very shaky start to a very long season the Brew Crew have righted their ship. Their pitching as well as their hitting have come to life. They are playing 500 ball and with 30 games in they are 15-15. They are currently in third place in their National League Division. Long season, let’s go Brewers!

Random Headlines

Let’s get to some weird and interesting stuff!

-       On a more serious headline note, Virgina Giuffre, one of Jeffrey Epstein’s most prominent abuse survivors, dies by suicide. RIP Virgina. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis please seek help.

-       There is a $20K American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo and no touchscreen! Seems like fake news, but it isn’t. Once again this is one of those bullshit companies that advertises this low entry vehicle with government incentives (soon to disappear) and if ordered the way a normal purchaser would it is more like $40K!

-       In more motoring type news, Kawasaki unveils a rideable robot horse that runs on hydrogen and moves like an animal. You can’t make this shit up! It does not come in Kawasaki green!

-       From the Daily Mail, this headline would be more outrageous and gross if it wasn’t’ true! I was born with two vaginas and men act insane when they find out! I simply have no comment. For more details, please research on your own.

-       Chinese restaurant closed down after so called roasted duck turns out to be street pigeons. The restaurant was located in Madrid and those patrons that ate the shit bird are still vomiting!

-       More Oarfish keep washing up on Southern California shores. These ugly sonofabitches are just that ugly! There is conflicting folklore with some saying when this ultra deep ocean dweller is washed up it means a bad omen and some say a good omen. I say keep it out of my tuna!

-       On the lighter side, an Australian woman’s Minon collection coming in at 1035 of the little yellow bastards earns her a Guinness World Record! The little creatures are from the movie Despicable Me! Wonder if they like it down under?

-       Wild chimps were caught on camera enjoying fruit that contains a high level of alcohol! The stooped monkeys in Africa were indulging in breadfruit that was fermented! And guess what, there was no cover charge!

-       A New York ad campaign with sidewalk signage is of the scratch and sniff variety! The colorful ad depicts upper torsos and underarms and you can scratch and sniff the pits!  I mean, WTF?

-       And lastly, maybe they are the fairer sex of all! Women can determine if they like someone when they first meet them by scent alone! It’s amazing, our attunement to other people, even without being consciously aware of how in tune we are, study author Vivian Zayas noted. I must say, that really stinks!

Interesting individual of the month [IIM]

This month’s interesting individual is

Eli Roth

Eli Roth

Eli Roth is one of our favorite so-called horror directors. He has also acted in several films with a stand out performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, as The Bear J! Roth was touted by critics as being part of the Splat Pack due to explicit violent and bloody movies. He splashed his way onto the big screen with 2002’s Cabin Fever. When interviewed about this twisted and bloody tale he said he wanted to make a movie with the most blood for the year of its release. He followed Cabin Fever with 2005’s Hostel. The film was produced by Tarantino and their partnership continued through the years. Hostel was part of a group of films that critics called torture porn. Roth appeared in both of these films; in Cabin Fever he was the camping stoner Justin Grim. In Hostel he is simply listed as an American Stoner, seems to be a theme here! His other films that we dig include Hostel Part 2, as well as Knock Knock, The Green Inferno and Thanksgiving. Roth’s most notable films are horror genre based, but there is intelligence displayed along with smart dialogue and very good casting. Hostel stands out to many as being a hard to watch gore fest, however the film has great pace, cinematography and locations. Hostel is smart, and scarily based on human trafficking that takes place in the Eastern Block countries. Roth was born in Massachusetts and is the middle son of three. His parents were both white collar professionals. Roth married actor and model Lorenza Izzo, who also starred in The Green Inferno as well as Knock Knock. The buzz is they ended their marriage after a four-year run. Interestingly Roth speaks French, Italian and basic Russian. He has done far more than just horror, but that is the genre we gravitate to. Eli Roth is shooting a sequel to 2024’s Thanksgiving. Leave it to Roth to make a Thanksgiving film full of blood and gore!

One of my favorite Audrey Hepburn quotes:

To plant a garden, is to believe in tomorrow.

If you want to be happy, do not dwell in the past, do not worry about the future, focus on living fully in the present.
